L.A.M.B. or L.A.M.E. ?
Yes, we have been bred to hate all interpretations of style that come from the likes of celebrities. The main catalyst? The simple ‘fact’ that these labels are not controlled by the celebrity in question at all but more so by an appointed leader with a number of collaborations under his or her belt.
We’ve seen lines by them all: from the Olsen’s to the Simpson’s. And each and every one is articulated by an aging man in leather, deciding that men and women will soon be feeling jean jackets with ersatz lettering or tube tops made of tissue paper. In fact, the thought of said man can frighten a celeb so much that they often stray away from the business of high fashion in general and steer their looks towards tweeny boppers or puppy dogs. Some may even snuff clothes to begin with and shoot for the more achievable perfume fame.
So what differs Gwen Stefani from the pack? Well, for one, she showed up at NY’s S&S ’07 Ready-To-Wear presentation among bigheads like Donna Karen, Ralph Lauren, and Y-3. But as a collective, can we the public possibly merit a mere appearance as a sign of a truly dedicated designer? Promotion after promotion can hardly coax me into believing that this woman is serious about her new foray into the world of fashion. I distinctly remember a huge campaign warranting the up-and-coming label Rocawear, backed by rapper Jay-Z. We all saw how that turned out. We all knew how that would turn out. It’s not that our singers and actors and socialites (oh my!) aren’t capable of turning out high street duds, it’s simply that they aren’t invested enough. It’s a money-maker, basically. Another branch to their ever-growing empire. And why slave meticulously over a craft which you are simply not inclined towards? That’s where the temptation of an in-house designer comes into play. Hiring John Doe with X credentials is much more appealing than Diva Dana with an MTV Movie Award.
But we’ve seen success in the past. Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs has come to gain much respect over his rather high profile affiliation with Sean John. But how much involvement was there?
So when it comes to Ms. Stefani I ask: How much was personal interest and how much was personal finance?
The label shares face with Zaldy Goco, a former model turned designer. So a collaboration did arise… But I cannot help but wonder about Goco taking over L.A.M.B. Gwen, as we’ve seen over the years, has been a very style-conscious woman. And whether or not she has always made appropriate choices when it comes to her attire, she has always made premeditated decisions. I question the level of control a personal stylist has ever had over her.
So maybe Gwen’s a stylish girl, but does that make her able to whip up a whole S&S line-up? The skeptical side of me laughs maliciously but the less cynical side sighs in wondering belief. Why not?
Now, the collection in question is very hit or miss with me. Some I love, some are distasteful and notoriously Bad-Celeb-Label. But let us highlight the fact that I, along with many other critics, did find serenity in a good portion of L.A.M.B. Spring 2007. So is it L.A.M.E. or very much L.A.M.B.?
Take the poll and decide yourself!
